Join us as a trustee

Citizens Advice Shropshire | Volunteer Role

Lead with Purpose. Inspire Change. Make a Difference.

Citizens Advice Shropshire is seeking a visionary and strategic leader to become our next Chair of the Board of Trustees. This is a unique opportunity to guide a respected local charity through a period of exciting transformation — and help shape the future of free advice services for the people of Shropshire.

About Us

We are a trusted, independent charity offering free, confidential advice to thousands of people across Shropshire every year. Our Board of Trustees is a small but powerful team of professionals who oversee strategy, performance, and governance — and provide support to our Chief Executive and staff.

The Role

As Chair, you will:

  • Lead and inspire the Board of Trustees
  • Support the Chief Executive, acting as a sounding board and strategic partner
  • Set agendas and chair meetings, both in-person (Shrewsbury) and online
  • Attend committee and network events, locally and nationally
  • Drive strategic planning, trustee development, and recruitment
  • Act as a spokesperson for the charity when needed

You’ll play a key role in ensuring Citizens Advice Shropshire continues to deliver high-quality, accessible advice — with a focus on supporting the most vulnerable in our community.

Who We’re Looking For

We welcome applications from individuals who:

  • Have organisational leadership experience
  • Understand charity governance and financial oversight
  • Are passionate about social justice and community empowerment
  • Have experience contributing to or leading boards, regardless of sector

We value diverse perspectives and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply.

What You’ll Gain

  • A chance to make a strategic impact in your community
  • Opportunities to collaborate nationally within the Citizens Advice network
  • A structured 6-month induction, shadowing the current Chair
  • Reimbursement of travel and out-of-pocket expenses

The successful candidate will formally take on the role no later than November 2026, following election by the Trustee Board.

Time Commitment

Approximately 1–2 days per month, including quarterly board meetings and occasional events.

Other Trustee Roles

Do you want to make a positive impact in your local community?

Citizens Advice Shropshire is here to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find a way forward; whoever they are and whatever their problem.

We learn from the problems and experiences people bring to campaign locally and nationally through our parent body to change policies that impact peoples’ lives.

We are a local independent charity, and we have opportunities for you to get involved as a Trustee.

Our group of Trustees lead the strategic development of the charity and ensure our resources are used to their maximum impact.

As a Trustee you will be joining a leading local charity that makes a difference to 1000s of lives every year.

We provide free, independent, confidential advice to people in Shropshire helping people to find solutions to problems they may face with finance, debt, employment, and many other issues.

The charity is governed by their own board of trustees, who are ultimately responsible for ensuring we meet our charitable aims, provide the strategic direction, and oversee performance, offering support when needed to our senior management team.

We are looking to strengthen the Trustee Board further by recruiting some new Trustees.

We are looking for trustees with skills or experience in Finance, HR, health and safety, regulatory compliance, and strategic management.

People with skills and experience that will help us (including lived experience) are wanted to help us maintain our reputation for being a well run charity. We will welcome people from underrepresented sections of the community including younger people.

This is an opportunity to not only put something back into the community but to be part of a friendly and supportive team.

Trustees shape and oversee the strategy and delivery of our service. The role requires attendance at approximately 6 board meetings a year (once every two months), our AGM and additional sub-groups which normally take place in alternate months. In addition, we have Trustee Development sessions and additional training sessions.

The time commitment is to attend a monthly meeting and participate in training and development sessions (about 3 a year). Our Board meetings are held in person in Shrewsbury, but other meetings are ‘hybrid’ – we use MS Teams to allow people to join from home or work.

Our trustees are all volunteers. We pay travel expenses at set rates for attendance at meetings and provide training and an induction for new trustees.
