Join us as a trustee

Do you want to make a positive impact in your local community?

Citizens Advice Shropshire is here to give people the knowledge and confidence they need to find a way forward; whoever they are and whatever their problem.

We learn from the problems and experiences people bring to campaign locally and nationally through our parent body to change policies that impact peoples’ lives.

We are a local independent charity, and we have opportunities for you to get involved as a Trustee.

Our group of Trustees lead the strategic development of the charity and ensure our resources are used to their maximum impact.

As a Trustee you will be joining a leading local charity that makes a difference to 1000s of lives every year.

We provide free, independent, confidential advice to people in Shropshire helping people to find solutions to problems they may face with finance, debt, employment, and many other issues.

The charity is governed by their own board of trustees, who are ultimately responsible for ensuring we meet our charitable aims, provide the strategic direction, and oversee performance, offering support when needed to our senior management team.

We are looking to strengthen the Trustee Board further by recruiting both a new Treasurer and other Trustees.

Our Treasurer takes the lead in providing support and oversight of our finances – both at a technical and strategic level. We employ a Finance Manager to prepare our accounts and accounting reports to the Board and manage day to day finance operations. Our Treasurer will offer support to the Finance Manager and Chief Executive.

The ideal person will have with a professional background in finance/accounting and, ideally knowledge of charity finance although this is not essential.

We are also looking for trustees with skills or experience in HR, health and safety, regulatory compliance, and strategic management.

People with skills and experience that will help us (including lived experience) are wanted to help us maintain our reputation for being a well run charity. We will welcome people from underrepresented sections of the community including younger people.

This is an opportunity to not only put something back into the community but to be part of a friendly and supportive team.

Trustees shape and oversee the strategy and delivery of our service. The role requires attendance at approximately 6 board meetings a year (once every two months), our AGM and additional sub-groups which normally take place in alternate months. In addition, we have Trustee Development sessions and additional training sessions.

The time commitment is to attend a monthly meeting and participate in training and development sessions (about 3 a year). Our Board meetings are held in person in Shrewsbury, but other meetings are ‘hybrid’ – we use MS Teams to allow people to join from home or work. At present our Board and Committee meetings are held in the afternoons.

Our trustees are all volunteers. We pay travel expenses at set rates for attendance at meetings and provide training and an induction for new trustees.
