Beware imposter ‘CAB’ cold callers

Citizens Advice Shropshire has become aware that impostors claiming to be from the CAB are cold calling people in Shropshire.

Jackie Jeffrey Chief Executive Officer for Citizens Advice Shropshire said: “We want to stress to everyone that no genuine CAB adviser, or anyone else connected with the CAB service, would ever phone or text someone out of the blue. If you do get cold calls or get a text about such things as loan offers, help with debt problems, or help with accident claims – it is almost certainly a scam. Please make sure you don’t give or confirm any personal information.”

There are 4 things that you can do if you suspect you are the target of a scam:

  • Check – with a trusted friend, relative or neighbour.
  • Get – advice from the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 04 05 06 , get online consumer advice and information at adviceguide.org.uk or contact Citizens Advice Shropshire on 03444 99 11 00.
  • Report – scams and suspected scams to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or via actionfraud.police.uk Action Fraud is the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and internet crime. If debit card, online banking or cheques are involved in the scam, you should contact your bank or credit card company right away.
  • Tell – family, friends, neighbours so that they can avoid scams too.
