Volunteering

Help us make a real difference to people in your community

Citizens Advice Shropshire (CAS) has been part of the local community since 1939. We provide free, independent, confidential and impartial advice to everyone and campaign to improve the policies that affect people’s lives.

The Citizens Advice service is the largest advice-giving network in the UK with over 3,000 outlets and 20,000 volunteers. It’s a great organisation to be part of with many benefits for our volunteers.

We couldn’t make such a difference without you.

There’s support every step of the way

We are looking for volunteers who care about the work we do and are committed to our aims and values. We will train you and give you support from when you join and then ongoing as you develop in the role you take on.

Volunteering with Citizens Advice Shropshire means you will be joining a team of volunteers who had a variety of roles.

Take the Citizens Advice quiz to see what role may be most suited to you.

 Current volunteer opportunities

We are also looking for a PR and Fundraising volunteer. Find out more here.

Advisers & Assessors  (Telephone Assessor roles also)

If you take on either of these roles you don’t need to know it all! We provide all trainees with a comprehensive accredited training programme that will give you the skills you need to deliver a high quality service to clients. Our up-to-the-minute electronic information system contains most of the information you will need when helping clients. You won’t be left alone after you are trained. There will always be a more experienced adviser /assessor or supervisor, who will give you support, advice and guidance.  These roles require a commitment of at least 6 hours a week.

Receptionists

The public face of the Citizens Advice service and the main link between the public and the office. This role is flexible and you will join a rota of other volunteer receptionists.

Research & Campaigns

Volunteer in a Research & Campaigns role and use information from problems brought to the service by clients to help bring about real change by influencing local and national policy. This is a real opportunity to help improve the lives of people both locally and nationally, including those who have never used our service. Roles are flexible, and can sometimes be partly carried out away from the office and outside opening hours. Please note we are not currently accepting applications for Research & Campaigns volunteers at this time.

Trustees

All local Citizens Advice are independent charities, governed by their own board of trustees, who are ultimately responsible for the quality and range of the service. The Board needs to be made up of people from all sections of the community with a wide range of different skills, experience and perspectives. We are looking to strengthen the Board further by recruiting Trustees with a professional background in finance/accounting, law/HR or PR/Communications. This could be as a full Trustee or in an advisory capacity (to be called upon occasionally as needed). A full induction into the Trustee Board’s role and responsibilities will be provided.

Trustee Board Member

Trustees shape and oversee the strategy and delivery of our service. The role requires attendance at approximately 6 board meetings a year (once every two months), our AGM and additional sub-groups which normally take place in alternate months. In addition, we have a Trustee Development Day once a year and additional training sessions.

Honorary Advisor

Honorary Advisors are not Trustees but will offer advice and support on specific areas of expertise and occasionally participate in meetings. This role is new for the organisation and may suit people who are unable to commit sufficient time to the role of Trustee but want to help the charity at a strategic level in a particular or specialist area.

We are particularly interested in recruiting Trustees or Honorary Advisors with a background or expertise at a senior level in one or more of the following areas:

  • Finance and Accounting
  • Managing Investments
  • Strategic Information & Communications Technology
  • Legal Services
  • Fundraising

Trustees and Honorary Advisors must be committed to the values of Citizens Advice.
Both roles are voluntary but travel and out of pocket expenses are reimbursed.

Meetings are normally held in Shrewsbury but since Covid 19 are held by video conference via MS Teams.

To apply for either role please download an application form below and email Chris Boote. If you would like an informal chat about either role please e-mail chrisboote@cabshropshire.org.uk and provide your contact details
