These cartoon people look friendly and have taste in flagsCitizens Advice Shropshire is a local charity that is a member of the national Citizens Advice Service. We rely on different funders and donations to do our work. We are independent and give free, impartial, and confidential advice. Next to that we work to improve policies and practices that affect people’s lives. We do that through partnership working, membership of other organisatons, representation at forums and campaigning.

Citizens Advice Shropshire has 3 bureaux and a large number of outreaches in Shropshire. Have a look at our locations page to see where we are based. Some outreaches are in GP surgeries, others are in community centres. The opening times on this website do not include our appointment times, which are much wider. We also operate an Adviceline on 03444 99 11 00 and all our bureaus are independent Hate Crime Reporting centres.

Every year we help around 9.000 people. Most of them live or work in Shropshire. Our clients come from all walks of life, have different backgrounds and ask about all sorts of issues. The main categories of issues we deal with are:

  • Debt
  • Benefits and tax credits
  • Employment
  • Housing
  • Relationships
  • Legal matters

Have a look at our facts and figures to learn more. We use our data to campaign for change, which in turn prevents problems from occurring and helps people we haven’t even met before. Read more on our mission in our Strategic plan.

Most of the work is done by our volunteers, but we also have some paid staff to support them and deal with more complex cases. All of our advisors have had at least a full year’s training. They have access to a unique information system on all sorts of issues. Sometimes our clients can help themselves, for instance by using Adviceguide. At other times we use group work to help people along.

The quality of our advice is regularly checked in several ways, by ourselves, by our membership organisation and by independent examiners. As a result we have been awarded 2 quality marks:

This means in turn that we also hold the Charity Commission Members’ Quality Standard. In addition we have been exempted by the Office of the Immigration Services Commissioner to provide Immigration Advice and Services. Our reference number is N200200149.
